ANZ Bank building
The present building was built in 1928 and was noted for being heated throughout with hot water piped from a boiler in the basement.
The original bank building was erected in 1879 and contained, besides the front office and the manager’s room, nine family rooms that were occupied by the manager and his family. The building was 2 storied, built of brick faced over with cement.
In August 1927, the original bank building was demolished to make way for a bigger and better building. The existing building was built in 1928 and was considered one of the most modern in the town, one of the most modern buildings in this town and represents the latest thought in office construction and modern equipment.
The outstanding feature of the building was the plumbing, the whole building being heated with hot water pumped from the basement. This work was down by a local Waimate plumber – C.W. Englefield.
The building remained in use as an ANZ bank until the branch was closed in 2020 and has subsequently been redeveloped as a bakery/café.
