The Waimate Trail - Te Waimatemate Ara
A shared-use trail for walkers, runners and cyclists
Our goal is to develop a 67km loop trail that links existing track networks between Studholme, Kelcey’s and Gunn’s Bush via Mt Studholme at the top of the Hunters Hills and through the old Waimate Branch Railway to Waihao Forks.
It will be a world-class visitor experience that celebrates the significant culture and heritage of the area, and take in some of the most varied and spectacular scenery in South Canterbury.
We’ve completed the detailed design stage of the trail - it’s going to be a game-changer for recreation and visitor attraction to our region.
Social and economic benefits
The community benefits in creating the trail are numerous and include:
Direct economic contribution to the region through increased visitor numbers.
Local employment.
Future options to link with the Alps2Ocean trail and other trails in the Canterbury and Otago regions.
Building on the East Coast’s reputation as a cycle trail network.
A spectacular walk and cycle trail for all ages and abilities.
A place for family, friends and groups to adventure and explore the outdoors.
A fun way to improve health and wellbeing.
A space that connects to our local Māori and European heritage.
