Dr Margaret ,Cruickshank
“The beloved Physician – Faithful until death”
19th November 1919, southerly gales and rain chilled an exhausted Dr Cruickshank and after a rural visit she succumbed to the influenza epidemic. On November 28th her condition was reported as desperate. She died later that day. Dr Margaret Cruickshank was a pioneer of women’s medical work in New Zealand. She has a special niche in history and after twenty years of service to the district of her adoption, Waimate remembers her in a unique manner with a statue in Seddon Square.
