Victoria House (1878) was purpose built by W. McDonald for a bakery with living quarters above. In 1890, Donald Mitchell purchased and established a drapery business here, an association with the garment trade which extended 100 years.

Building was then occupied by a partnership, Peter Grant (grocer), G.T. Shackleton (draper). In 1902, the latter purchased and lived in Victoria House. From 1930s, the premises under various ownerships have provided retail business to the present day.

Originally a bakery when built in 1878 Victoria House has had a long association with the garment trade starting with Mr Donald Mitchell’s Drapery Business “The Very Shop”

“The Very Shop, The Very Shop,

 The Very Shop it is,

 The shop where Donald Mitchell

 Is doing such a biz.”

The front of the shop was “ modernised” in the 1930’s with the addition of show windows.
