Walking Track update
Waimate Gorge to Waihao Forks Section. Hamish and Jo have met with several of the farmers to go over the proposed route from town to Waihao Forks. The proposed route is along the old railway line which passes the major swamp where moa bones were found and would curl round and pass the beautiful rock features above the Waiho river. Hamish and Jo are looking at the gradient and features and will work out the best options for a track which works with farming practices. This will be presented again at another meeting.
Once the feasibility study has been completed it will go out to the community for their input with track development. We hope to have as many people as possible in the community and schools to be part of the whole trail from development to planting, and researching the area’s history and culture of the area. The project will be incorporated into the local curriculum and teach the children to value the outdoors and will give them ownership and value within the community.
